New Zealand is highly regarded for the quality of its wine industry, which has also helped fuel innovation in the natural products industry. Studies have been done to determine the antioxidant potency of some grape seeds, particularly the Sauvignon Blanc grape variety.
This is similar to a study in the 1990s that determined that green tea grown in the very high UV light conditions that exist in New Zealand produced excess levels of oligomeric procyanidin (OPC) polyphenolic compounds. These compounds are powerful antioxidants and are responsible for the generally recognised health benefits of green tea.
This is likely the same mechanism for the very high antioxidant activity found in the Sauvignon Blanc grape seed extract.
An independent study using New Zealand grape seed extract in skincare demonstrated that it was able to improve skin cell membrane integrity by both decreasing trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) and improving elasticity each by at least 16 percent. Reducing TEWL and maintaining hydration of the skin is a major objective of the skincare industry.
